What is the Cause of Your Hair Loss?
Is a Hair Transplant Really for You?
|
Dr.
Eisenberg's first step prior to considering any hair restoration option
for you is to establish a proper diagnosis for your hair loss. This is done during the
initial consultation.
Although the most common cause of hair loss is genetic, there are other
causes as well. These other causes of hair loss can often be treated with medicines and many are reversible. As a board certified specialist in skin and
hair (certified in the U.S. by the American Board of Dermatology and in
Canada by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada),
Dr. Eisenberg can assess your hair loss and recommend the best treatments
available. There are certainly situations where you may be better off without a hair transplant!

What is Your Baldness Pattern?
|
Men
As a medical hair specialist,
Dr. Eisenberg can assess your hair loss and anticipate your baldness pattern, or
how your hair will shed with age. How your hair is thinning, when it
began to thin, and your family history are some of the factors he takes into
account. Understanding a baldness pattern is a key factor in developing
a successful hair transplant surgery plan, as hair loss is usually progressive over
many years. |

Women
Women lose their hair in a different pattern from men,
usually resulting in an overall thinning on the
top with a normal frontal hair line. |

As with men, not every woman with
hair loss is a candidate for hair transplant surgery. Each patient requires
individual assessment by an expert in both the surgical and medical
management of hair loss disorders. It is especially important that medical causes of hair loss be ruled out before hair
replacement surgery is considered. Hair transplant
surgery is also very helpful in hiding scars from face lifts and other types
of facial
surgery, and in replacing thinning eyebrows. |
Would More Hair Make You Feel Better About Yourself?
In one study, 25% of men said they would trade 5 years of their life for
a full head of hair (AOL, August 1996)!
A full head of hair is often a powerful symbol of success, youth and attractiveness
for both men and women. Hair loss can therefore have a tremendous
economic, psychological, social and emotional impact.
Men may feel less virile with the onset of hair loss. Thinning in women
can be even more devastating, as it is often less socially acceptable and
sometimes interpreted as a sign of advanced aging, illness and a loss of
femininity.
Hair transplantation usually produces a more youthful appearance and often
results in heightened self-esteem and greater self-confidence. These
changes are often as enduring as the hair that has been transplanted and are
often the motivating forces that maintain a person's enthusiasm for hair
transplantation.
